The Wrestler

I finished watching the highly acclaimed film last night, and was disappointed, to say the least. The acting was pretty good- particularly by Marisa Tomei and that chick that sleeps w/ Manson. But the story... trite and cliche. I went in with great expectations--I'm a fan of Aranofsky, and Requiem for a Dream is an amazing work of art. It is a film that leaves you depressed and faithless, literally tumbling around in your head days after watching it.

I did not walk away from The Wrestler feeling in any way changed or humbled. Aren't we all Randy "the Ram" Ramsinski, or his female counterpart, "Cassidy?" I don't know a single person whose life has ended up the way they intended. That being said, Rachel Evan Wood is amazing in the role of a girl who simply got screwed by life, and is struggling with less than simple emotions for her broken relationship with her father.. Her anger and disappointment is justified, and emotional to watch.

Turn on any "reality" tv show and you'll see plenty Mickey Rourkes, desperately trying to get back a piece of their glory days and making pitiful attempts at salvaging their youth. Aren't the saline and botox filled "Real Housewives" just as pathetic as this fictional character? No, they're even more sad, because they are real. I suppose what I'm trying to say is... this movie was heavily lauded as the film of 2008; Mickey Rourke's career was resurrected from empty booze bottles, tranforming the has-been into a relevant force to be reckoned with...when really, he was playing a role millions of us live every day...he was playing himself.

To truly witness the genius of Aranofsky's realistic portrayal of degenerates, the real grit, addiction, and pain is shown in Requiem.

MILES: What the hell are you doing, Tubby?

HURLEY: Checking to see if I'm disappearing.

MILES: What?

HURLEY: Back to the Future, man. We came back in time to the island, we can change stuff, so if little Ben dies he'll never grow up to be big Ben who's the one who made us come back here in the first place, which means we can't be here and therefore, dude, we don't exist.

MILES: You're an idiot.

HURLEY: Am I?
